Happy New Year – The best is yet to come

Many people have concerns about what is coming both here in America and throughout the world. We are on the verge of major changes in all aspects of human society, from the political, to the economic, social and environmental. The thing we must all keep in mind is that somehow, things keep getting better and better with each passing year.
While it may appear that we are moving backwards in certain areas, any objective look at the nation and the world today verses any other time in recorded history will show that things are better now than they were in the past. This is mostly due to advances in technology, but progress in understanding the workings of the human brain and body also play a large role.
Our society may not move forward in a straight line, progress rarely does, but any kind of broad look shows that things are much better now than they were at any time in the past. Given this reality, it is virtually certain that the best is yet to come.
There is one major caveat, however. Humanity is still entirely dependent on our wondrous planet and her atmosphere and ecosystems for providing for our needs and offering us a suitable habitat to evolve and live our lives on. If we are unable to avoid a habitat destroying event such as a nuclear war, then things could get worse, much worse, in a matter of minutes.
While there are a myriad of other threats to our habitat that we face, all the others are solvable using technology already available. The threat of nuclear war stands alone as an existential threat to human civilizations survival. Let’s make this the year we resolve to remove that threat from the list of perils facing humanity. If we are able to do that, then we can say that 2017 was truly a very good year. Happy New Year to all.
